Geography

The Czech Republic is situated in Central Europe. It’s said that it lies in the heart of Europe. The Czech Republic is an inland country. Our republic has four neighbours. In the north it borders on Poland and in the south on Austria. The shortest border is with Slovakia in the east and the longest with Germany in the west. Our country has three parts: Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia.

Landscape

The Czech Republic’s borders are natural. They are formed by Mountain ranges. The border is lined by the Šumava range in the south-west, the Ore in the north-west, the Luž mountains, the Jizera mountains, the Giant mountains and the Eagle mountains in the north and Hrubý Jeseník and the Moravian-Silesian Beskids in the north-east. The highest mountain is Sněžka in Giant mountains, which is 1602 meters high. The longest river is Vltava. Other important rivers are Labe, Morava, Dyje and Svitava. Cascades of dams are built on Vltava, which flows from the Šumava mountains. Labe flows from the Giant mountains. The Czech Republic don’t have any sea, but in South Bohemia there are many ponds, for example Rožmberk. In the north there is the famous lake Máchovo jezero.

Climate

Our republic lies in the temperate zone. There are four seasons in a year. Spring, summer, autumn and winter. The average temperature is about 0 (zero) degrees in winter and about 25 degrees in summer.

Population

There live about 10,3 milion people. Density is 131 people for per square kilometer (sq km). The major nationalities living here are Czechs and Moravians, but there are minority groups as the Silesians, Slovaks, gipsies, Poles, Germans, Ukrainians and Russians. The capital city is Prague with its population about 1,2 milion people.
